Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero

It's not a good song, she's certainly no Adele, luka won't go out to bat for her, but there's something interesting about this being the kind of pop music that comes out at the moment. it reminds me a bit of some of the white american frustration that grunge expressed, but channeled into a kind of narcotised and more self-controlled form full of therapy-speak. it's hyper self-aware. it almost functions as an excuse. as usual the main thing to talk about is that this resonates with millions of people and what that says about the places we live.

Taylor Swift is, I think, proof positive of my contention that Western culture has become so myopically short termist in terms of deriving pleasure that it can never transcend the fixation valourising teenage emotions, even when the vitality for its participants in their 30s and 40s is no longer extant. See for instance ilx. Borderline perverted.

ive not heard enough TS to really say but she seems like all her stuff is written from the POV of a teenage girl. the weird girl-gang-like obsessiveness/protectiveness of her fans seems to be a result of that.

You can only say that because you have never been to Nashville.

i dont see any therapy speak in the lyrics though. plenty of that about, i just dont see it here.

shes already got a place as one of the Great American Songwriters of our time anyway.

i cant be fucked, its not things youre therapist would say, its language informed by a therapy framework. i think youre being pedantic. its like every line.

maybe another entry into my pet list of musicians becoming super famous and absolutely not being able to handle it. its almost cruel that we collectively do this to someone. i guess the riches and all the obvious advantages are a counterbalance to that to some extent. but still.

it was absolutely great. had a real big brother reality tv ritual feel to it. like she was made a scapegoat for everything that is wrong with this country. but she volunteered for it so no need to feel a shred of sympathy
