i love that mix too.
then again, i'm a big fan of ghislain poirier and nick catchdubs is a jolly nice chap, too.
mms said:ghislain poirer is a top boy def - his productions so far have all been very good
mms said:i got the clipse mix tape 'we got the remix' today strangely feat mixes from various people such as dj quik, disco d, dj dainjah, ghislan poirer and loads of guests, the production on alot of the tracks is fucking amazing, really sick but fuck me the mcs are coke bores on wax, blathering on about moving coke.
gumdrops said:does anyone have a link to the clipse mixtape? if more coke rappers rapped like the clipse, hip hop would be a better place.
mms said:that's true and their styles and sentences are good but they are boring men, literally all their tracks are about coke.
mistersloane said:and while we're on it, DJ Quik? I've always - REALLY - wanted to like what he does, and he talks a fantastic CD - the interview with him in Scratch a while back was just the bollocks, but I've never been convinced, yet. What part am I not getting with him? The best thing I saw was when he was on the hip-hip 'Weakest Link'. Is there a musicianship issue or something? And has anyone noticed how fucking complicated Dr Dre's loops are getting since he started studying music?
DavidD said:Quik is dope. Try "Rhythmalism" or his recent one, "Trauma," or his shit with Suga Free, esp. the first one, "Street Gospel." Also if you like early 90s shit, try Quik's debut.
Not sure about best hip hop albums, cos I haven't been listening to a lot this year, but this is definitely one of my favourite listens so far. And yeah, I agree, the rappers are generally a detraction - I liked 'Instrmntls' much better, despite the shit IDM title.gumdrops said:the new dabrye album is one of the best hip hop albums ive heard this year although i think i would like it more without the rappers on it.
michael said:Re: Ghislain Poirier - some of his stuff has a lot of crossover with what Dabrye's doing too.. the really un-funky arpeggios and clomping beats, I guess. But I find Poirier's productions really cold and stark. Which is probably exactly what he's going for, but I expect... well, El-P, Lif or Aesop Rock. So I find it incongruous to hear him putting Busta or whoever on his mixes... It doesn't give off party vibes for me at all, feels real bleak. Have people seen his shows and things? What's the mood?
And not knowing French I can't get whether all of the "hip-hop cliches but in French" moments are just like what stelfox was criticising Kiwi rappers for, or whether it's knowingly daft. For example, his myspace page, where it's like "Rebondir Records dans ta face!" Made me laugh, anyway.
