Okaaaaay.

PD, of course SOMETHING happens daily in hip hop, the question is does anyone give a reasonably large shit about that something? im going to say no, by and large, as far as whats happening right now. and rza cant score a film to save his life (i liked one or two tracks on ghost dog but most of that was just bog standard, monotonous loops that i could have made myself)... god knows how he got the credit for kill bill, all eh did in actuality was sample sound effects from old kung fu flicks and give them to tarantinos foley sounds dept to use!

and tactics, yep, lil wayne is super-bitch made lol. what a lame.

On your first point, I couldn't disagree with you more (I'm sure you figured that already, though.). As far as your second point goes, I couldn't agree with you MORE.

Kinda sorta....

i really like the new elp album and the jay dilla ruff draft thing on stones throw. best new hip hop stuff ive heard in a while...

The Jay Dilla Ruff Draft EP is a remastered reissue with bonus tracks from an album he released on a small indie in 2003 that was out of print for 3 years until Stone's Throw picked up the license and let Karriem Riggins and Black Milk get to work preserving his legacy. I still can't get over the fact that Little Brother and 9th Wonder have parted ways...at least they have Oddisee, Khrysis, Illmind and Nicolay as producers...it'll still sound like classic LB material. i know its old, i just never heard it before. i assumed it was just some 2nd rate dilla stuff he licensed out to groove attack, but it turns out, its actually some of his most interesting, adventurous production evahhh. very synth-y, i see the influence on dabryes last album a lot clearer now. i used to think it was kinda wishful thinking people saying that dilla had a detroit techno influence in his beats (apart from a few) but ruff draft makes it pretty clear. its like underground resistance meets slum village. brilliant.

!!!

will be checking. i love his more synthy production. some of my favourite J Dilla beats are from the Phat Kat album which i randomly have, ive not heard stuff like that elsewhere but have wanted to... can someone point me in the right direction?

did you hear the slum village trinity album? it has a few dilla beats which are synthy on there and the album as a whole is kinda electronic and has a kinda finnicky air to it programming wise... i need to hear the phat kat album.

I just dont know
i'll look into that slum village

he only produces a handful of tracks on the Phat Kat LP, but they're incredible. not a huge fan of the mc'ing though, a bit average i reckon, and some of the other beats are quite weak

suck your thumb
The Frank 'n' Dank album is pretty much 100% synthy Dilla - just depends whether or not you can stand the lacklustre rapping throughout. I could never stand those two.

You should also check the Jaylib demos that leaked onto the internet six or so months before "Champion Sound" came out - that's what converted me to the more electronic side of Dilla after spending a little while mistakenly thinking that my favourite producer in the world had fallen off.

I'm purposefully avoiding downloading the El-P leak. I really do hope the album lives up to all the anticipation I will have built up by the time it's released.

the elp album is superb, i dont really need the guests (cat power, trent reznor from NIN and some others) on there though. theyre not conspicuous, theyre not just doing the hooks or anything, but i dunno, i dont really like el-p's sound being softened (even if it is ever so slightly) by singers. hes also trying some new things out with arrangments which are very interesting.... it doesnt 'not work' but i dunno, some of it maybe isnt totally necessary. i need to hear it a lot more though, it takes a long time to get your head around properly. its easily going to be one of the best hip hop albums of this year though.

Style Wars is THE film that most legendary graf artists endorse as being the greatest. I'll post an entire blog about graf on my blogsite next month and I'll come back and post some books about graf here:

Subway Art
Spraycan Art
Style: Writing From The Underground
Getting Over
The Art Of Getting Up
Dondi: Style Master General
Graffito
Hip Hop Files 1979-1984

That's good to start...there are A LOT more. As for the arrests of DJ Drama and Don Cannon, their trying to shake them down for info because what they're doing isn't illegal. They are paid and commisioned to make mixtapes by labels and artists! Fox News and other mainstream media can't grasp the concept of a mixtape! Fuck 'em if they don't do the research but claim to be journalists!

In other news, the cats at Oh Word! (one of the biggest and most well known hip hop blogsites) used my list of 50 Slept On Hip Hop Videos and even posted links to most of them. Check it out here:

What did you think of the Kidz In The Hall? It's nice and that, but I can't help feeling they're should've been a little more...

kids in the hall was alright. dont get the hype. if it wasnt hyped it would just be another standard indie rap album. it has a bit more balls to it and i like the fact it seems a bit faster than a lot of mid tempo boringness but other than 1 or 2 songs, i dont get what the fuss is...
