I think there is a slight risk that what Hyperdub and similar people are doing might become a sort of specialist taste - but this is as much to do with the infrastructure of the music and how it is presented and marketed etc as it to do with the tunes themselves.

Hyperdub could start by changing their logo/ sleeve art. A lot of it is like early 90s Designer's Republic stuff all over again (the IDM comparisons just write themselves). Maybe change it to having nice watercolour landscapes painted by old age pensioners as the cover art to their releases or something radical like that.

that was almost all that idm originally was though.
so whats the point?
it's not like people doing this stuff are big fans of boards or whatever else they'd do boards music, and they're all quite young still.

I remember hearing Slaughter Mob big up "Aphex Twins" at the Grime Launch Party in 2004... nuff said

The whole "post-dubstep" thing seems to imply that a lot of these artists are turning away from dubstep as a result of stagnation or wobble or whatever, but i think its the opposite. More like so many producers, artists, etc from all over have been influenced by the sound therefore you have a ton of new music that doesnt follow the original makeup of dubstep circa '04.

So it has nothing to do with "post" anything imo. I am not even offering some sort of categorization, only trying to break that particular one down.

I am not even gonna touch the idm comparison, just gonna try to pretend i never heard it.

i don't think you understand the situations where post- has been used to define a genre. for example post-punk wasn't about rejecting punk, but embracing new influences while keeping the same attitude (political commentary, ect). this is what's happening. The sub-bass/garage influences/loose genre rules from dubstep are still there, but they're bringing in lots of house/grime elements/lower tempo into it also. it can't exactly be defined as the same thing as dubstep has become (not just by the creators, but in the public eye) but the influences and attitude are definitely still ingrained.

Any reports on the Hyperdub party? Was feeling a bit ill and got a bit lazy last night, but regretting not making the effort now.

Who did this Videeo character turn out to be?

worth it for the second room alone - Mala 2005/06 classics set and Kode9 3-hour funky n grime n jungle fest... :D:mad::D

a dj, didn't recognise him from anywhere else. played a bit of boogie and italo from the small stints i saw.

also was one of the most ramout nights i've ever been to - you could barely move in either room at peak time.

Videeo was good, but the night was too busy at peak times to be enjoyable. I got stuck next to some twats for 9 + Spaceape who'd obviously had a big day at the rugby. Oh, massive game at HQ...

And Samiyam made me fucking angry. His set was the dullest thing that's ever happened.

Hyperdub at Corsica only got good when it stopped being a string of live acts in a very crowded room and turned back into a club with DJs and room to move.

Kode 9 was amazing in room 2 though I only made it through 2 hours of his set.
Ikonika & Cooly G both rocked it in room 1 which was great to see as the last time i'd seen either of them play it had been pretty underwhelming.
King Midas Sound sounded like Massive Attack from the bar (not in a good way) and Samiyam made me want to do a poo (also not in a good way)
He also brought the IDM thing back to mind :p
