Shame I read this thread only now.
I just recovered (more or less) from a terrible cold myself as well. If it's any consolation, mine lasted for about two weeks (starting with a little throat pain, minor fever and head aches, then blocked sinuses, followed by heavily coughing and finished by blowing my nose almost every minute for the following day) and is now about over. I was too stubborn to take any medication, but did work at home.
About the remedies Zhao introduced and consequent discussion, I can add that fruit&veg juices do help -I drank quite a lot of them- but they're not the ultimate remedy. If not, I wouldn't have been coughing and sniffing for two weeks. A pity, I didn't think about the chicken soup. I had an Italian variant though, tortelli in brodo. Basically, it's meat-filled pasta boiled in broth.
Not eating when being ill is the craziest I have read, honestly. I can understand that absorbing food is quite a task for an ill body, but I am sure it's a minor task compared to fighting the bacteria. Appetite is low when ill anyway... when appetite kicks in again, it usually means you're starting to feel better.
