Yes yes, debating where to go for my boxing day party, either that house passion one or that one Arun Verone's playing which was posted a while back.

I played 02:31 this saturday, the launch party of 'midnight sessions' where it opens at 12 rather than 2:30. I was the warm up act, 12-1 and Tom Shorterz told me "keep it mellow warm up bouncy NO jackin" lol. Started with some garage house stuff and moved up towards deep tech for most of the set. Went absolutely off, biggest reactions came from Mind Your Step, Nothing to Fear, Bigger than Prince and Party Non Stop. An of course You Want Me, lol, so much for no jackin. Yeah this stuff's wicked, super excited to see where it goes next year.

Also had the privilege of having some long in depth chats with Marcus Nasty and Kane from Cause & Affect. Covered loads of really interesting stuff, with Marcus saying that the jackin guys really shot themselves in the foot by moving away from the jackin tag and trying to insert themselves into the wider house scene where they'll never be the top dogs - which was pretty much exactly my view on the matter. Kane argued that like, he was looking at the long term not the short term, and that garage, bassline, all these genres die, but house goes on forever. For him there was also like a moral element of it in that bassline and all those genres always had a strong degree of violence associated with the scene, whereas house has always been more about tolerance and love and all of that, which is why the 02:31 scene has managed to avoid the violence which plauged those other genres.

Kind of undermined his point about house when I asked him about deep tech though, he talked about how he liked the sound, but couldn't get behind the scene. He talked about how Mark Radford was playing Brum that night and that event always has stabbings and problems with violence, about how some of the producers are courting that ghetto image and attractive that sort of fan.

How does this square up with people's experiences of deep tech raves? Is it something lots in translation when this stuff moves out of London? Is it that jackin already has the mdma loved up raver contingent locked in Brum, leaving only a more street crowd for deep tech? What's the vibe in a London night? I know people are dancing, but is it love and peace, or is there some of that tension which has characterizes so many UK scenes (jungle, garage, obviously grime, a little bit with funky, not at all with dubstep lol)?

lol sounds like u played a peak time slot in the warm up

lance morgan birthday bash on sat is looking rave of the year, even better than the last audiowhore apparently, till the next audiowhore anyway, and house of joy on boxing day is gonna be massive as well. hot creations was a roadblock at pandora wasn't it? dnt think there's much lost in translation if anything the people r even more gassed cause the y dnt get to see the djs as much.

as with anything like this there's gna be ur bad crowds coming out but if you're just going out to enjoy your night cant say ull get sucked in. cudnt say its peace and love doe but like blackdown said "bad boys make the best music" right?

edit: was browsing the net and happened to c u guys have got a dialogue of sorts going on ILM. good to c ppl tlking about this elsewhere.

reason i actually came in here was to drop another set by glen butcher, promo for his birthday night coming up january 17th at hidden which is closing down later in the year :/

the truce track that starts coming in at 41:26.. gonna kill raves. mind ur step/ten walls mix is sick as well

Lol, bare in mind the rest of the night is jackin, which is quite a bit faster, and I'd say more gassed than deep tech, and Id say it warmed up nicely. Had nuff people saying nice things about my set, "most Id ever danced that early", "warming up but also with lots of energy", "sick set" <3

Yeah, will definitely be checking out a deep tech rave for Boxing Day, what do you recommend?

You say bad boys make the best music, and maybe that's true on the production side, but honestly once you've gone to a rave like 2:31, where absolutely everyone chats to everyone, there's zero aggro, no sleaze, girls and guys chatting, no evil eyes, no one standing still, it's kind of hard to accept anything else...

my quote was kinda tongue in cheek/sarcastic i dnt seriously believe that lol

boxing day is either scala for house passion or euphorium for house ent, eitherway its up west

i would like to go to a rave where theres nuttin but positive vibes but living in london unfortunately reduces that possibility, at least for music i like

though saying that i suppose these proper overground parties like magna carta are good as far as behaviour goes

having said all this though i think House ENT might be able to catch them up the end of the year. Morgan is throwing his party on his birthday (Frequency) in Birmingham and is only second to Rads in terms of headline power, he's introducing a lot of people in wider England to this, has the most hype around his name atm and his tracks aint bad either (When The Night Falls). Arun Verone (aka DJ Pantha) is the scenes best DJ for my money and a bad bad producer (I Do, Hater Shades) in his own right and B3 is my fave producer and best encapsulates this sound IMO. these lot are gonna start releasing their tracks under the (predictable) name House Entertainment Recordings (a root I can see more people going down unlike funky) and the teasers on facebook have me gassed. their free boxing day party will be a blinder.

I find all this talk about 'trouble' and raves being 'hood' a funny one, obviously nobody wants to see that when raving, but in terms of falling foul of any of this shit it is unlikely. Most of them seem nice and safe.
Any beef or trouble at these raves originates outside of the dance, but these places may be the only time where two sides of a beef are together in the same place.

Reminds me of that sample in Kryptic Minds - Badman: 'wherever the music is 'appening, the rude boys they are gonna be there' - i reckon this is especially true in london and brum

As long as you're not screwing anybody or falling about drunk/drugged, just keeping yourself to yourself you'll be fine

yeah hilarious

but wait.

"Man dies after fatal shooting at London's Avalon Club
A man has died in hospital after he was shot inside a nightclub in London's West End.

Police were called to the Avalon club in Shaftesbury Avenue at about 03:00 GMT.

The Metropolitan Police said the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He has not yet been formally identified.

A man has been arrested and is being questioned at a south London police station, a spokesman for the force said.

Shaftesbury Avenue has been closed while police investigate."

Yo, I've not even been to any of the parties, I'm just repeating what Kane from Cause & Affect said about the scene in Brum. It sounds like up there there's a big divide between 02:31/jackin scene - the vibe being 100% MDMA loved up, with any aggro totally non-tolerated by the rest of the crowd and the deeptech scene, I suppose even at events which are also at the Rainbow like Circo Loco, which had a stabbing back in the summer, and generally seem to pull a more street crowd from what I hear.

You're right though, I'm sure the parties in London are wicked fun and massive vybes, in the way that only parties for scenes which are at a creative peak, having their moment, up and coming etc. can be. I'll find out tonight anyway! Now which should it be, House Passion or House Ent???

But yeah, you can't expect those ravey peace and love vibes at just any rave, but that's why I do maintain that there is something actually very special about 02:31, above and beyond just being a wicked party. I missed hardcore and all those free parties by a long long time, but when I read people talking about them and them vibes that's literally the only thing that comes close to my experiences at 02:31.

(Also, there's obviously some dodgy politics, or at least big contradictions to the 'peace and love' vibes at 02:31, which creates this space of freedom from aggro, positive energy on the inside, by having quite an authoritarian door policy - which consists of course of keeping out anyone who looks too mashed, but also like, any black guy who doesn't look hipster, or any big group of black guys. I know that Reynolds, and that book Club Cultures talks about how acid house had that contradiction too, but it's obviously uncomfortable to realise that the vibes inside are maintained by quite a discriminatory policy on the outside)
