@Mr. Tea that curve makes no sense without a community immunity: there is no way that it can work its way back down from 100s deaths/day - ie. 10,000s of infections/day - purely by hand-washing/distancing.

This is the thing, though. The idea of an incipient global totalitarian system - "the coming authoritarianism" - ought, by rights, to appeal to the left-libertarian instincts in anyone who is even remotely inclined in that direction. It's the natural reaction to the idea of Big Government and Big Business ganging up on us, the poor proles, to oppress us and impoverish us.

But in reality, it's leading to a massive groundswell of support for right-wing authoritarian parties and leaders - groups which are not only nationalistic and reactionary, but also hyper-capitalist. The exact opposite of the direction these impulses "should" be pushing in.

I mean, the worldview your cousin espouses is fundamentally the same as that of many millions of Trump voters. Save yourself from tyranny by voting for the hard-line authoritarian with a total contempt for democratic norms. Save yourself from capitalism by voting for the billionaire property baron. Save yourself from the global Satanic nonce gang by voting for the man accused of raping a 13-year-old.

I don't have an answer to all this, of course, and we're in such uncharted waters I'd be instinctively suspicious of anyone who claims to have an answer.

yes, right wing populists have had great success playing to those suspicions and capturing that 'market'. but my cousin is voting Jacinda.

I'm reminded of the guy I encountered on Twitter who said he was a socialist and was supporting Brexit because it was a socialist project. I just don't have the capacity to argue against delusion of that severity. What can you even say? It's like people who think there would be no racism if it weren't for Black Lives Matter.

the walls genuinely are closing in though and cheering for Kier Starmer at question time isnt going to slow that process down one jot.

monopoly. concentration of wealth. in other words, also conspircy (and capitalism) 101
I think it's pretty fantastical to imagine that any of this requires a global pandemic as some sort of pretext. I mean was the world an egalitarian paradise in 2019?

Dribbling midwittery. The upswing of right wing populism is resistance and a last gasp at preservation of localism, good and bad. We've been through the looking glass since 2016, Trump winning made the other side go for broke by sewing racial division. WW3 is in full swing now. Prediction: if Biden wins, China moves to take Taiwan by the end of 2021.

Right, but if it's inevitable then why does it need covid-19? You see what I'm getting at here?

What I mean is that your response, and your cousin's and yyaldrin's, are accelerating the very changes you think you're fighting, as far as I can see.
