But reduced economic cost, compared to a lockdown, was supposed to be one of the advantages of their approach, wasn't it?
In the eyes of the US libertarian right wing, yes. Recently the Swedish argued against the use of masks because "not everyone can afford them".

Not defending Sweden but their approach was never about "saving the economy"

But their approach seems to have been less than successful health-wise as well: "Last week Sweden’s total coronavirus death count crossed 7,000. Neighboring Denmark, Finland and Norway, all similar-sized countries, have recorded since the start of the pandemic 878, 415 and 354 deaths respectively."

Are you sure about that? That's an incredibly stupid attitude, if it's what they actually said. Disposable masks costs literally pennies each when bought in bulk, and even washable cloth masks are still only a few pounds/euro, and that's at public retail prices. Sweden is a wealthy country with a well-funded welfare state. I have a hard time believing they'd prefer thousands of avoidable hospitalizations for the sake of saving a few million kroner on free masks.

Sweden is the UK of the Nordic countries, for sure. Their death rate would obviously be far worse if they had a population density like the UK's or the UK's general background levels of poor health.

Sweden suddenly rolling out wholesale changes to policy is fake news. Their second wave is on the wane anyway, just like most other European countries.

@Mr. Tea There is no evidence whatsoever that masks prevent 'thousands of hospitalisations.' That's why SAGE's summary of their uses is still 'weak evidence of a small effect'

Anti-science lockdown dopes should be grateful that we didn't lock down early enough to suppress the virus much cos otherwise we would be staring down the barrel of utter despair right now.

If you can't see what lockdowns do (ie. exactly what Ferguson told us they would do, in March) by now, you're a lost cause.

That's right: cases are decreasing in Italy and Spain and the death rate will follow.

so everything and every health official in that Wall Street Journal story is wrong?

The WHO only just told governments to stop using lockdowns...what more do you need to know?

Lots of scientific papers coming out now to confirm the bleeding obvious.

@IdleRich "Weak evidence of a small effect" for masks (SAGE) and no benefit to stop flu transmission (WHO).

did you even read that WSJ article? the facts of Sweden's increasing and significantly higher death rate -- 10x more than neighboring countries with similar sized populations -- and rapidly filling hospitals completely contradicts your unsourced graphs. look at the first chart in the WSJ article, deaths have dramatically increased in the past month or two.

you seem to ignore inconvenient facts and redirect focus elsewhere.
