did 'the jam' have good lyrics'

I liked The Jam but hated the Style Council, obviously.

"Going Underground" was an proper ear worm when that came out. There is a deterioration when you get to Town Called Malice though:

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life, 'cause it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for the runaway bus 'cause those rosy days are few
And stop apologizing for the things you've never done
'Cause time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to change
This town called malice
Rows and rows of disused milk floats stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious
In a town called malice, yeah
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, oh
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Struggle after struggle, year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice, I'm almost stone cold dead
In a town called malice, ooh yeah
A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef
Gets dashed against the Co-op
To either cut down on beer or the kid's new gear
It's a big decision in a town called malice, ooh yeah
The ghost of a steam train, echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere
Just going round and round, oh
Playground kids and creaking swings
Lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will
But I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice, yeah
In this town called malice, yeah
In this town called malice, ooh yeah

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls

That's Entertainment.

-- so it turns out I only like the early stuff ho ho. Up to 1980 they were gold.

No

they were my favourite band when I was 11 and were just splitting up. 11 was a great age for them (and that’s not being condescending - a great age for music generally) - but Style Council weren’t interesting to me (too southern) and never really bothered with Weller since.

Lyrics - the odd useful line but nothing remarkable

You're the Best Thing is a great song as well. Style Coucil are still uncool which is amazing as the 80s has been revived at least twice. It's like they're still too niche. Deep 80s.

I like the way Weller turned to American soul and made it sound like British pop without being shit.

You can imagine him being a rich old soul boy with a fantastic record collection, lots of 45s in white cardboard boxes.

The Style Council remind me of the 80s a lot. Men wearing stylish designer raincoats with belts, Blitz magazine, Robert Elms and Sade. It's an 80s I was slightly too young to experience but I saw it in the surrounding culture, the gestalt from magazines like The Face. Big emphasis on STYLE.
