French cinema is pretty brilliant on the whole. Much better than British cinema. On the whole.

We seem to coast on having made The Long Good Friday and a handful of other things.

You can up to about the 60s. Powell and press burger were world class no doubt. Then you had the play for today crowd and some of what Alan Clarke did is objectively genius. But after that, no. Not really.

Yes that's probably true as one side of the coin but the other is simply the numbers game in terms of audience
