Rock Music - let's be honest

sometimes
i heard the single by klaxons and its just another unmemorable indy rock song.
they are very good at marketing themselves aren't they, emi must love the fact that they do half that for them. making remarkable claims for very unremarkable music. well done klaxon's your're good at marketing, just what the music industry needs.

It's funny that you don't find doom metal sexy, I really do, I think it's the womby pulsating-ness of the riffs. I don't find it depressing at all, merely a kindof aesthetic which I personally find does it for me when done well.

I love doom metal! Its real showerface music, if you know what I mean, uber-orgasmic-killface stuff.

that's a little harsh, obsessive maybe but there is nothing irrational about disliking this shite

not buying any of these apologias for bloc party/klaxons/arctic monkeys and a lot of this supposedly leftfield stuff is very weak, that 'geisha' lp is just converse + isis, neither of whom were all that clever in the first place

Yeah, Isis are horribly overrated tosh, neither post-rock enough nor metal enough...

Keep hearing the name Converge, loads of metal heads reckon its one of the best of 2006- what are they like? And what are the vocals like- I've got no issue with non musical beast-vocals, but its when the growl is put to melodic use (ie- Agalloch) that it starts to sound cheesy (to my ears). So?

they are like

njjiiaaaaaaaAAAAAaaAAA fu/I/UUU ah HrAAAAaaaaa fuuuuuFF szkrluuUUuUuuuUUuu, about one part burzum to two parts sum 41

that was a reference to them in my original post, not the david cameron trainers btw (edited)

virilio once posited that horror can take you much, much further, in terms of intensity of experience, than pornography.

not sure how this translates to the doom metal / sexy debate but it's relevant somehow...

Don't let the diss put you off! Geisha sound nothing like Isis; the post-rocky bits are much more like, intense Godspeed violin and Slint style broody build up to massive guitar blasts, rather than the comprimised heavyness of Isis. Besides, they only go into that territory in the last two songs of the LP; the rest of it is more like a feedback-drenched Converge.

I did get the Oceanic Remixes CD this year though, been meaning to listen to that...

Never Enough
Rock's like all music - good bits, bad bits, and too many subgenres for its own good. (If someone tries to play me any more Artcore / Folktronica I'll have to scream...)

METAL is still my love (Metalcore / Screamo / Nu-Metal). Last buys were Throwdown, 36 Crazyfists and Deftones. Personally I like mine fairly visceral, but not too so. Once you go over the screaming peak and can't hear real words any more, I just get bored. So the Death / Thrash / Gothic / Doom / Black / Viking varieties of Metal aren't for me. Go figure!

PUNK I've had a hard time with... I'd say Punk Rock was more like it - All That Remains, The Bronx, and others. But it can be hit & miss! :)
PSYCHE ROCK I find interesting, coming at it from the cratedigging / Funk & Soul direction. But I feel the need for bollock-crushing riffs afterward.

INDIE can die in its cold, cold grave. *Cough*. I mean... I'm glad they're doing creative things here in the UK, but I can't get into it. At all. The high-pitched guitars sound really insubstantial to me, like they're playing a ukelele. I guess I could still find it fun, like Benny Hill's chasing music, but I don't feel anything. No avoiding it really!

Think I'll be passing on that one.

They don't sound like that at all, have no fear. Try "You Fail Me" which, midway through, switches gears from wonderfully distorted hardcore into bizarre creaking balladry, complete with decaying tape and crackling campfire noises. "Jane Doe" is the ferocious bear to "You Fail Me"'s stealthy wolf.

Great stuff...and an amazing live act as well.

...and coming from the frozen wastes of Canada where Sum 41 is drilled into our heads on a daily basis, I can safely assure you they sound nothing like them either.

speaking of these particular frozen wastes (i.e. canada), why the hell is pop-punk SO HUGE here? I hear it so much more here than in the US. We've got Sum 41, Simple Plan, Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, Alexisonfire... it goes on forever!

i cant believe they hosted a gig by pete smackhead doherty late last year. or was that selfridges? either way, it strikes me as a bit of a sign of something going amiss when youre letting some guy whos in and out of court every week for a drug habit play at a dept store with an international rep to keep.

Yeah, but everybody's decadent now, everyone's promiscuous, weed, ecstacy and coke are totally commonplace. So why would anyone care about heroin use? Is it really that surprising if Doherty is wheeled out to entertain some easily amused rich shoppers and tourists?
