yes on video chat i have never looked for a moment at any face but my own. not once. wouldnt dream of it, even if they were naked

we dont get to see our own face as a rule. it makes sense to try and out things to see what works and what doesnt. how bad you can make yourself look and how good.

In the case of tik-tok and vloggers its how relatable - at the extreme end anyway. Your interaction with the machine (a massive international audience feeding back very quickly) teaches you to condense and amplify yourself into a kind of cartoon

So much of this is like being an old man on his porch, looking at life pass by and admitting that while my ignorance may well be vast, I’ve never listened to Sophie or Burial and tiktok is really tiktak

Yeah i feel that. Tik tok was the first platform to make me feel proper old, but on investigation i am horrified and then a bit fascinated. Obviously we can do the move of 'loada bollocks / not for me' or make some claim about self expression (you can choose not to engage, you can use it how you like ' look heres examples of people using it to feed the homeless/ sell drugs / overthrow govts' etc) but you can zoom out from content and take a look at kind of macro level effects on reallty and how we see ourselves. thats what that real life blog is really good at, a kind of mcluhan take on emerging technologies
