Beast of Burden
Well, maybe not a millionaire, but he's not just average middle class, he's supposed to be a stuck-up very wealthy businessman. That's half the premise of the film!

There is always that trope in American family comedies of the dad who works too much to see his family.

The flip side to it is that the family always lives in palatial splendour which they'll have to give up if the dad learns his lesson about the importance of family, but they never show that part.

I should point out that there are scenes throughout the rest of the film that I find emotionally affecting.

It's the execution of Stemartin's reuniting that I find queasy.

A likely story.... What will I watch tonight? Teen comedy or infantile ultraviolence?

I saw it by accident. We went into a pub a few years back and they were screening it

Do you see that climax as ambiguous, Craner?

Is Steve Martin unwittingly sticking the knife in by snogging his telegenic wife in front of the hapless widower?

Or is it bittersweet?

Or is it just sweet - Candy can move on from his misery, he's back in the bosom of family.
